The Texas Education Agency recently announced that Aldine ISD earned the highest financial rating. This is the 13th consecutive year the district has earned the top rating.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today recognized Aldine ISD’s Victory Early College High School as one of 335 schools selected as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2015 based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. These schools demonstrate that all students can achieve to high levels.

The school year is only a couple of weeks in. But high school seniors are already working toward earning college scholarships. One lucky Eisenhower High School student just picked up her first scholarship. Diana Ramírez is a 2015 Linda Lorelle Scholarship Fund recipient.

The 2015-2016 school year started out with a win for Jacqueline Tello. She took first place in the Houston Public Library Tween Photo Contest.

Six students from Nimitz High School made their own history. The Cougars brought home first and second place wins for their student projects. National History Day took place June 14-18 at the University of Maryland.

One hundred and thirty students from 10 campuses took part in the 2015 Aldine ISD Chess Tournament. The event took place May 30 at Aldine Middle School. This is the second year that AISD holds the unrated tournament for K-12th grade students.

Several Aldine ISD students placed and earned special awards at the regional science fair. Hundreds of students from across the region competed at the Science Engineering Fair of Houston. The SEFH event took place during the spring semester at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Several Technology Student Association members from Carver High School reached their goal this year. All three took home first place wins at the TSA State Competition. The event took place this spring in Waco. They now advance to the national competition.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards program has recognized José A. Gutiérrez. The program has identified him as one of the most talented young artists in the country.

The National Center for Urban Education honored 24 schools from across the country. The Center bestowed each with Excellence in Urban Education Awards. Texas led the way with 15 schools considered to be among the nation’s highest performing schools. Of these, two campuses from Aldine ISD garnered awards. Stephens Elementary School was among the four schools in the country named Gold winners. The Center known as NCUST named Anderson Academy (a magnet school) and eight other schools from the state Bronze winners.

Most folks are familiar with TAEA‘s high school and junior Visual Arts Scholastic Events or VASE. But TAEA has also been recognizing elementary students and art educators since 2009. The Texas Elementary Art Meet or TEAM is the awards program for the young. This year, 19 Aldine ISD students earned TEAM awards. One student brought home a “Top of the TEAM” Award. This is the highest honor TAEA bestows on elementary age students.

Students at elementary and intermediate schools have been reading a lot this spring. They have been reading classic literature to contemporary award-winning books. The students then put their book knowledge to the test as they competed in Aldine ISD’s “Name That Book” reading competition.

Duke TIP is honoring 10 academically-talented Aldine ISD seventh graders for their exceptional scores on the SAT. Duke TIP’s 7th Grade Talent Search identifies students across the U.S. who have scored at or above the 95th percentile on grade-level achievement tests. As part of the program, these academically talented students take above-level college entrance exams to learn more about their abilities. A select group of students across the U.S. also qualified to attend the Duke TIP Summer Studies programs. A total of 20 Aldine ISD students qualified for the Summer Studies programs. Of these 17 students qualified to attend the Duke TIP Academy for Summer Studies and three qualified to attend the Center for Summer Studies.

Four student members of the Business Professionals of America (BPA) at Hambrick Middle School competed at the national competition. The BPA National Leadership Conference took place in May 6-10 in Anaheim, CA. The team brought home a third place win.

The Academic Decathlon team members from MacArthur High School showed their academic prowess. They competed in the 2015 U.S. Academic Decathlon competition. The teammates advanced to nationals after wins at the state competition. They did not disappoint. Five students competed in the online individual competition. They each placed in the top three in their respective levels.

Magnet Schools of America sponsored the ninth Annual National Magnet School Student Poster Contest. It is part of the celebration of National Magnet School Month in February. This is a national initiative to highlight and promote magnet schools across the country.

The Eisenhower High School Spanish Club students showed their linguistic skills. The students and their sponsors attended the 2015 Pan American Student Forum. The campus was among the 57 schools from across the state that competed April 17-19 in San Antonio.

The best culinary teams from across the district met head to head for a districtwide “Chopped” Challenge Event. Teams from Aldine, Davis, Eisenhower and Nimitz high schools took part. But there could only be one champion. And that title went to Davis High School.

Aldine ISD’s EC/Pre-K Centers were named winners of H-E-B’s Excellence in Education Early Childhood Award. The announcement was made on Sunday, May 3 during the 14th annual H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards banquet held at the JW Marriott Hotel in Austin.

The AISD campus is the only team that will represent Texas at the international event.

The Volunteer Guild of the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts in Spring named 27 winners. The students competed in the museum’s eighth annual Student Art Contest and Juried Exhibition. Ricardo Colín from Anderson Academy brought home the Jurors’ Selection prize.

Aldine ISD high school student artists earned top honors at the State Visual Arts Scholastic Event. The competition took place at the Dallas Convention Center April 24-25. Two students earned Gold Seals, 13 received Exemplary 4 ratings and seven others earned Superior 3 ratings.

The Carver High School theater troupe recently competed at the UIL One-Act Play Area Competition. The judges advanced the troupe’s Raft of the Medusa to regionals.

Lauren Jones and Christopher Tate showed off their artistic abilities. Both competed in the Mayor’s Art Scholarship Houston Competition. They are among the students that received recognition at a reception held April 15 at City Hall. More than 300 students submitted pieces. Lauren and Christopher’s pieces are among the more than 50 selected for the exhibit.

Carver and Eisenhower high schools have advanced to the UIL One-Act Play Area Contest. The two Aldine ISD campuses had great performances at the Bi-District 18-6A Contes

Two students from Hoffman Middle School competed in the Technology Student Association State Contest. Sirrianda Mbianda and Bobiana Hill showed their technical skills in team and individual events. Both advanced after winning at the state-qualifying contest held at Atascocita Middle School in February. The state contest took place April 9-11 in Waco.

The Spelling Team from Aldine High School shined at the District 18-6A UIL Academic Meet. The students brought home a first place win in the Team Category. This is the third consecutive year that Aldine High School has captured first place in competition.

MacArthur High School recently took first in their class at the 2015 Texas Color Guard Circuit East Regional Championships. The event took place at Morton Ranch High School.

Miguel Parra from Victory Early College High School won first place in the Houston Bar Association’s 2015 Law Day Photography Contest.

The theater troupes from Carver, Eisenhower and MacArthur high schools will compete at the Bi-District UIL Contest in April. The troupes advanced after their performances at the District 18-6A UIL One-Act Play Contest held March 28 at Aldine High School.

The Carver High School Theater Department received two Tommy Tune nominations for their production of Ghost the Musical. Kyle Ward was nominated in the Best Actor category. He portrayed the character Sam Wheat. Fellow Carver student Kristopher Adams earned a nomination in the Best Featured Performer category for his portrayal as the Subway Ghost.

The Texas Education Agency nominated Victory Early College High School along with 25 other campuses from throughout the state.

Magnet Schools of America announced the recipients of the 2015 Magnet Schools of Merit Awards. The awards program recognizes the top magnet schools in the United States.

The Society for the Performing Arts announced the 25 winners of the 17th Annual Wells Fargo Student Art Contest. Among them are four students from Aldine ISD.

Miguel González from Harris Academy won the district spelling bee earlier this spring. In a field of 48 spellers, students fell to words like “dromedary” and “prescient.” But Miguel proved he was the Spelling Bee Champion. He went head-to-head with competitors for 13 rounds without misspelling a word.

H-E-B recently announced the finalists for the grocery chain’s 2015 Excellence in Education Awards. Aldine ISD is among the finalists in one of four categories announced.

Aldine ISD students claimed 48 awards at the 2015 Scholastic Art & Writing competition held in January. Harris County Department of Education organizes the annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards event for the region.
